Is there any advantage to having them? Do you guys still have them in new construction? Not much literature on the subject that I can find.
I think most of the benefits are taking user error out of switching and safety.
I know personally I feel much safer pressing a button in a substation and watching the switch open rather than standing under the switch and doing it manually.
This all depends on the site and power conditions of course but most utilities or bigger power production places I have been to use motorized on anything considered medium to high voltage (very generic statement).
we used motorized disconnects when i was working in the utility for the safety of personnel, in my opinion, we dont think much of cost, since the owner will just pass on the cost to customers.. hihi..
i have also pole mounted load break switches which are remotely controlled in substations, these were mounted via structures..
