On a 208 Volt 3 phase 1/4 HP motor, is motor overload protection required per NEC 1910.305 (F) (iii)? A customer is wanting to use maintained pushbutton to start and stop motor without any protection other than main disconnect fuses.

Re: Motor Overload Protection

The NEC requires motors to have some type of overload. The 2005 NEC reference is 430.31, 430.32, and 430.33. In particular your case is covered by 430.32(D) which may allow the branch circuit to provide the required protection.

I don't recognize your code reference.

Re: Motor Overload Protection

It could be internally protected already. Check and see. Let the customer know that small motors only cause small fires when not protected.
