Opened a new motor peckerhead today to connect it and found a small transformer inside the peckerhead. Secondary leads are factory wired back into the motor, primary leads are to be field connected. Nameplate is difficult to read but primary appears to be 480, secondary possibly 52v.
I'm thinking possibly some type braking but have no definite idea,
Anyone every seen a this ?

Sounds like possibly for winding heaters.

(a) As it turned out it supplies a brake.

(b) Have no idea of the origin or how common the term is. It's been used all my working life..sometimes to describe what 314.16 calls a "terminal housing for motors"..sometimes to describe me.:)
