I need to install one of those motors that lower a chandelier from a very high ceiling. I've installed one before but the location I need to install this one will have no access once the house is drywalled. (New construction) Is there any type of motor driven fixture-hoist available that is acceptable to use in this kind of location?

I'm thinking No! :(

Any suggestions from the peanut gallery?!? :D

Re: Motor to lower Chandelier?

Alladin light lifts are about 12 in. X 20 in and are rated in several weight classes.I did one 5 or so years ago in a steeple type shaft in a home that had no access above.we installed a 36 in medallion attached with screws and plugs to hide them and the light lift was above. If we had to service or R & R there was enought room to do it.It was tight but it worked out fine.Oh under the medallion was no drywall just the attic.Hope this might help.

Thanks, I went to the Alladin web site and found this "remote" set-up. This just might work. I'll have to look at the framing again.
And your trick is pretty good too! ;)

In some applications it workes fine the Inspector brought up access but with the medalion and a breaker lock out for servicing purposes it passed with flying colors.

Re: Motor to lower Chandelier?

Dave if you haven't already do so, Go back to Alladin web site and click on "Downloads" then when you get to that page go to "Remote Instructions" or click HERE

Make sure you order the correct unit with the extra cable and limit, this has to be ordered with the unit as it is not a field installable kit!

And it is not UL listed for remote locations over 25' so do your home work first. :)

Re: Motor to lower Chandelier?

i did one with another contractor in sf several years ago. we used some pulleys to swing the whole pull set up to another part of the music hall. This was with general construction materials. worked/s well last time i heard. it was 20 feet from the floor and changing bulbs was a problem. centering the first pulley was the most crucial. ran cable thru attic above cross ties and back down a wall. need to make sure there is some tension so that cable can't untrack.

I wouldn't try to bury the whole set up as there are some adjustments that need to be made. once lined up it seemed problem free.

Re: Motor to lower Chandelier?

Take a good look at your Alladin lowering device.

I had to nearly rewire the entire unit to meet basic code requirements.

The control cable was a ribbon type cable not listed to be installed in walls or ceiling spaces

The romex feed from the controller to the octagon box had the ground cut off of it, thus no ground to the fixture. Had to replace with flex and thhn to ground the box.

THe thhn wires from the disconnect mounted to the unit utilized a romex conn. rather than a chase nipple.

There was no ground conn. between the plate that makes contact from the chandelier to the controllers octagon box. Had to take the center spring copper piece from a keyless fixture and bolt it on to the ring mounted to the octagon box.

By the way, this product was UL Listed, but my guess all of the above violations must have been added on to it after the labeling??????

Re: Motor to lower Chandelier?

I have installed probably a dozen light lifts and never thought of there being a ul issue or code problem.I always check for proper grounding on the ground before lugging that heavy thing into trusses and have not found grounds cut on any.You do have to check the limit switches first, sometimes they are hooked up wrong but after the first one that was installed then tested and found to have that problem.Crawling through trusses 32 ft in the air to swap contacts that was a one time event  Now that the point of the control wiring ribbon cable not listed for use within a wall has been brought up I will check on that.I really like the style control unit that has the auto memory feature as compared to having to stand there every time to lower and raise it.
