This is a final update to my well pump motor voltage dilemma.. hopefully.

Square D is the manufacturer of the VFD that was bought for the job, and they said it would be okay to run the VFD through a xfmr to the motor, but the VFD would need to be sized 25% larger than the motor. Too late, VFD is bought...

It ends up that the City has a spare 480V, 50 HP VFD/bypass drive that we will likely use for the 40 HP well pump motor. The Electric Dept can mount 12470:480V service in short order.

.. game over..... we'll see :)
 
I would go ahead with a 63 Kva 240 > 480 volts Delta/Deta transformer and connect the output ( 480 volts) to the existing VSD.

When you but the transformer, ensure it is rated as inverter duty, as the transformer will be subjected to harmonics.
