Hey guys I know this sounds like a dumb question coming from me, but motors are not my area of expertise with respect to residential consumer appliances.

Is there such a thing as a 3.5 or 4 HP motor made to run of Single phase 120 from an outlet? Say a wood working router or table saw. I am thinking 240 30-amp dryer plug minimum. NEMA 5-30 maybe?

Motor appliance manufacturers do all kinds of silly things for marketing, such as advertising "peak horsepower" and such. You really do need to work the dataplate backwards to see what the motor is, for real.

To answer your question more directly, the biggest 120V motor I've seen was "real" 5 horse.

I think the difference is that often the marketing folks supply the peak HP that is possible, not the HP that can be maintained.

I have a shop vac that claims 3.5 HP from a motor the size of a tuna can.

There is something "fishy" about that claim. :D

Well this question came about from a friend who is going to buy a Craftsman Tablesaw/Router Combo. I threw the question at him about installing a 240 plug and he Na he would just plug it into one of the garage outlets which raised a RED FLAG in my mind. Just didn't add up in my mind.

Yep I am aware of peak vs true wattge tricks.:D

lets see a 1 hp motor at 120 volts draws 18 amps..Now I believe the HP rating of the vacuum is not the motor rating it is the vacuum blower rating, I believe you could classify the vacuum as a regenerative blower, with a vacuum hp is a deceptive term..because there are a lot of items that are rated in HP..

I would be surprised if a 3hp table saw wasn't 220 volts. I have a 1 1/2hp delta Table Saw that draws 12.8 amps on 120 volts and 6.4 at 240V.

I bet your friend is mistaken or there are some misguided numbers there.
