mounting detail

on a recent job i was asked by the inspector to provide a mounting detail on how my boxes for my lights were supported. they were all 2x4 pendants attached to surface mounted octagons with 3/4 emt between. Basically they are looking for me to give them a picture of 2-1/2" # 12's screwed though the tin ceiling, through the 3/4 ply and into a 2x12 ceiling joist. i could just draw it out but i would like it too look a little more professional than my chicken scratch any ideas would be great. Thanks in advance for the replies.

the inspector doesn't actually need a detail of the fixture itself. he would like a drawing of the box/washer/screw into the joist.

What???? :?

Why does he want a picture?? That's it?? No calcs???

There's no point to a picture without calc's. If he can't understand a verbal description as simple as that, he is in the wrong job.

Get some crayons and a napkin and draw it out for him.

It is the inspectors job (IMO) in this case to judge the installation as sufficient or ask another inspector for assistance or if the install really weighs a lot, get a structural engineer to justify it. A picture of the install does nothing.

So two #12's per box? You have 1 1/2 + into the joist? Sounds bomber. What about the EMT? I'm more worried about that. Is that being used as the pendant? If so, I would not be OK with that. You need somthing threaded, such as IMC.

And just to keep an open mind: Perhaps there is more to the story?

I suggest removing one screw, washers and all, and handing it to him, with an offer to shoot a pic with it sitting in his palm.

Why?

It is my understanding that he wants a drawing of how i mounted my boxes and pipe to the ceiling. I also know that the engineer must approve them. Im sure its his way of being in the clear since he wasn't actually there to see me install them.
