I’m a retired General Contractor in Northern California. I am installing a solar system on my property with (3) structures, built in 1949. As such, I am upgrading main meter panel and subpage at each building. I need to run feeders to each building, currently run overhead, in a very unsafe manner. (I’m under a time constraint to complete solar by Dec. 31, 2025, or I forfeit the 30% Federal tax offset).
Existing foundations and concrete patios/retaining walls make it extremely difficult to run feeders from main service (at main house) to other (2) buildings, each about 30’ from each other.
I built a new (very strong) fence along the property line about a year ago - complete with steel posts every 8’, embedded in concrete at a depth of 3’. The balance of the fence is wood. A robust structure. I would like to use this “other structure” as the mounting surface for the conduits required.
I plan to obtain a permit for the panel upgrades, separate from the Solar permit. The building department requires that I reference a specific code section that describes installation of these conduits and feeders - and requirements for this design - to be included with my permit submittal. Meaning, the conduit housing the feeder cables, mounted to a fence structure, as an allowed/approved installation method.
Is it possible for you to comment on this, and possibly refer me to the proper NEC section that I can reference with my permit application? While I do not have access to the NEC, if you provide the specific section, I may be able to find just that portion online.
