I've got to hang one of those dual-head motion sensor lights under an eave along a garage. There's nothing above the soffit material to fasten the box to. It's probably close to 2 inches of space between the soffit and any lumber. Any suggestions? Arlington must make something for this, right?

so whats holding the soffit up?

In some case you can use the ceiling fan box brace and yeah you can use that box to support it and most soffets typically go up to 24 inches however becarefull from the building wall to overhang it will really varies a bit on distance.

The last time I did that and used the ceiling fan brace due the overhang joints typicaly spaced 24" on centre but once a while you will get 19.2" spaceing as well.

Merci,Marc

This is always a PITA because of the flexibility of vinyl soffit and J-Channel. I am not aware of any company that makes something for this type of setup and sometimes I will remove the soffit and put a nailer where I need it then replace the soffit.

I am sure there are guys that screw to the channel at the corners if it is a hip roof so you have 2 channels but you have to be on a corner for that extra support that is still not quite adequate.

2 inches of space sounds like you should be able to mount something to it ow box or a 4 inch round use a plaster ring or arilingtons box extender to make up the differance

How are you planning on getting the wire there?

Fan bob is one idea that would work -- cow stated above. The other could be to cut a 2x4 or 1x4 long enough to reach between the joist. Cut a hole for a large pancake box and put two screws at the edge of the hole to fasten the wood you cut. Then mount the pancake to the lumber.
