Can outlet boxes be drilled if needed to provide optional mounting locations? Most boxes have mounting feet (some do not) but they may be not be in the best place to provide adequate box mounting. I believe that I read that NEC section 110.3 does not allow this

Re: Mounting outlet boxes

110.3(B) Installation and Use. Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.

If the instructions give you specific instructions on mounting the box, you would (at least in a legalistic sense) be bound by this paragraph to do so in the manner the instructions provide for.

Re: Mounting outlet boxes

This is a perfect example of a case where the AHJ can use common sense to allow other that obvious mounting means.

Specialized boxes aside, let's take a typical 4/s box.
Drill out the 1/4 inch holes to 3/8 - no problem.
Pop out the back KO and use a fender washer to mount it - no problem.

As long as the box structure is not weakened, I don't see a problem.

I think what Larry is saying is that there is such a thing as meeting the intent of the code. Sam mentioned 314.43 and I dont believe anyone thinks that you can run a screw through a plastic box but sometimes inovative mounting means have to be used that are not 110% legalsistic for lack of a better word.
