Mounting to a square light pole???

So - I have an area of several hundred square sidewalk light poles (sidewalk lighting) - throughout campus. One of the campus user groups wants to have 4 - 1/4-20 holes drilled and tapped into one side of the square pole to attach clips that will periodically hold a plastic outdoor sign. - which would direct people to the events or display a date and time of some campus happening. I can't find a specific code that would prevent this - I've been through 410.30B - but it doesn't address this specifically - my only thoughts were that now were using the pole other than its listing -

Advice - ??

Check with the pole manufacturer to see if they will have a problem with it. Do it by way of letter or email so you will have a record of it.

Many attachments (such as banners, flags, etc.) are attached to poles with a wrap-around strap (or two) that holds the flag holder. No holes required!

Search for >light post flag holders< and look at the pictures!
 
Mounting signs on a light pole is a violation of 110.3(B).

If you need to do it anyway, I would follow the advice in post #2.
 
Some experience with luminare poles...poles are designed for the luminare weight and wind load, which determines the pole design and foundation. For example installing a banner can create additional wind load, often the banners have slots for wind relief. So yes check with the manufacturer. And please use SS hardware to mount and be aware when you drill and tap there are wires inside, which is why I would suggest using a strap on band with a threaded clip.

maybe you can score a new tool from Band-It, one of the battery banding tools. Using the band-it tool would be faster than drilling and tapping and safer(y)(y)
