Moving service pedestal

I need to move a service pedestal approx. 20 feet. I believe the code states that the service must terminate at the disconnecting means within 3 feet of entering the building, originally the panel main. Can I use a disconnect in the new location, and then feed the panel about 18 feet away? The disconnect would be in the crawlspace. Or do I have to pipe along the outside of the house to within 3 feet of the panel before entering?

Re: Moving service pedestal

The three foot dimension you have used may be a local code, but is not in the NEC. The NEC says "upon immediate entry to the building".
Also the crawl space location may not meet the code rules. I would call the local inspector to get his ideas.

Re: Moving service pedestal

Thanks. I actually got ahold of a code book and looked it up.
230.70(A)(1) Readily Accessible Location. The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.
So if it enters in the crawlspace and the panel is located just outside the crawl, it may be legal. I will have to check with the inspector.
