I do a lot of MSHA ground testing for quarries and have become aware of other contractors using different methods. I was wondering who is doing things the right way. For example, for motor ground continuity our procedure is to run a wire from the MCC that the motor is fed from to the motor being tested. We file the paint to get bare metal to test and check the continuity between the motor itself and the ground at the MCC. I was informed that the previous contractor didn’t run a wire to the motor and somehow tested the ground at the MCC by disconnecting the motors ground from the ground bar. Maybe I’m missing something obvious but I don’t see their logic here. How are they testing anything this way? Next, the 3 point test at the ground rod ( or grid or whatever ) I am being taught to run my leads at a set distance no matter what type of ground system I have. They want me placing my first stake at ten feet and my second fifteen feet from the first. The directions on the meter and the information I found online tells me to evenly space my stakes and the distance between points should depend on the size and depth of the ground system being tested. I don’t want to argue with my employer , I have much respect for him and he has a lot more experience than I do with MSHA required ground integrity tests but I want to make sure that I am doing things the right way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all. You always come thru for me.
