Mud Ring Extension

I just got rough inspection on a very large work-shop/garage. Inspector called me on the round mud rings, for exterior lighting, being to short. They need to be extended by about a 1/2 inch in order to be flush with the exterior siding. I would normally purchase deeper mud rings but once rough inspection was passed the owner rocked the inside of the work-shop before I could get over there to replace rings.

I'm looking for a solution to extend the mud rings. Please don't reply stating to tell the owner to tear out the rock. I'm looking for a solution with-out tearing out the rock (if one exists).

Thank you,

they make plastic and metal extension rings, we call them flash guards were i live. they are cheap and simple to use, and they will solve your problem according to code.

These things are great and I recommend them all the time.

I know this has nothing to do with the question, but just remember that these do not have any fire ratings, so when installing switches or outlets or lights on rated walls that you must be flush with the finished surface.

Just doing a lot of 1 hr construction lately here in town and this comes up all the time.

FWIW when I have to tear out rock to re-ring 4S boxes, usually a hotmudder can fix it to dry in half an hour to an almost perfect state, and if this is rough, then it may not be all that bad to just trim a bit back and goob it up with hotmud.
