Some horn/strobes mount directly to a 1900 box. If you use a Caddy or B-line screw gun box bracket, you can gauge the bracket for 1 1/2" and use a 2 1/8" deep box. With 5/8" sheetrock that would put the box flush with the finished wall.I thought a mud ring was only needed when the face of the box is not flush with the surface of the sheetrock.
No, speaker/strobes take a deep 4 square 3.5 deep box with no mud ring. You also can use a 4 11/16' with a 2 gang mud ringThought you always needed plaster/mud ring when fire alarm device on sheetrock wall.

Wait so now I'm a little confused. The size of the box will determine whether or not a mud ring is needed? No, speaker/strobes take a deep 4 square 3.5 deep box with no mud ring. You also can use a 4 11/16' with a 2 gang mud ring
A mud ring is not required. Whatever box or mud ring you use is dependent upon how the device attaches.Wait so now I'm a little confused. The size of the box will determine whether or not a mud ring is needed?
Basically, yes. The back plate of the horn/strobe units I've installed have keyholes like a 4" cover, so they will mount directly on the 8-32s of a 4" sq box. A 4-11/16" box is too big, but the right mud-ring will allow the backing plate to be installed on one.Wait so now I'm a little confused.
