Hello all , had an power failure at an upscale apt bldg to emerg lighting panel.
reason being ups cabinets failed who knows how long ago.
Question, is it doable to eliminate this setup with a natural gas standby generator or would I have to implement the generator along with a ups system as in feed/generator/ups cabinet/lighting panel ?
I recall not being able to rely solely on utility companies natural gas but wasn't sure if still the case
Thanks all

If you go generator alone you will need an Article 700 setup. Those puppies can be expensive. It might be cheaper to repair/replace the UPS and go with a standby generator rather than emergency or legally required standby.

So in this case would it be opposite of what Im saying ?
incomming power feeds required ups then to an ats which would feed standby generator and on to emergency lighting panel only when batteries deplete?

AFAIK, a simpler solution would be to use the generator and utility through an ATS to feed the UPS. The presence of the UPS removes the critical requirement from the generator, I think.

That was my thinking if cant be on generator alone.
I/E utility, generator , ats , ups, critical load
just unsure if the order makes a difference

The way you list it is the way it should go. Make sure the UPS is capable of handling the full 90 minute load, or you can find yourself back in Article 700 territory.
