I’ am currently bidding a job for a a triplex. Each of the 3 units will have its own 100 Amp panel, and the House panel will be a 50 amp. I am considering bringing in a 400 amp feed, is that over kill or is that the correct service size i should be using for this project?

Certainly some overkill but you know how much until you actually calculate the load.

You shouldn't do this by the seat of the pants. There's number crunching involved. You need to know the square footages of the units and if the appliances and heat are electric or gas. Look at examples D4a and D4b in the code.

I agree. crunch the numbers and see what they say. We are not talking something that is going to kill you to do. Not a real long task and you will probably need to do it to get a permit anyway.
