I have always used the largest motor from the tables 430-247 to 430-251 multiplied that time's 125% then added the smaller motors but then I was reading 430-53 and it tells me to use the smallest motor first which is right and which is best.

Depends on whether you are talking feeder or branch circuit SC&GFP (Part IV or Part V, respectively). 430.53 is in Part IV.
