In 310.15b7 it states that you can use the 83% rule for sizing service conductors or feeder conductors that are feeding the entire load. Or for individual dwellings within a multifamily dwelling. I have a book that is showing a 6 unit multifamily. The calculated load come's out to 400 amps for the entire load for the building. The book is using the 83% rule to size the conductors to the service for the whole building. I do not believe that you can use that rule for sizing the service conductors for the entire load. What's your thought?

I don't think you can use 83% rule for the MAIN service conductors to a multi unit residential building.

Individual services and feeders to each unit yes it is OK to use 83%.
