I have piece of portable equipment (plug&cord) rated by the manufacturer at 3kW (4HP) (induction motor), 16A, 220V that is plugged into a receptacle being fed by circuit with a 20A-GFCI breaker and 10AWG THHN wire in 1/2" EMT, only 2 hot conductors + ground and ambient temp of the shop not exceeding 30C (100F). The item is portable, but having a crazy long extension cord is a tripping haazard, and thus I want several outlets around the shop for the item. I have been told that here in California (NEC 2008 , soo to be 2011) 220V branch circuits can only have a single receptacles, but these people haven't been able to show me where in the code it actually says this, and poking around sections 210 and 430 myself hasn't been any more fruitful. Anybody with a definitive answer would make my day.
Thanks
Eric

210.19(A)(2) mentions multiple receptacles on a branch circuit - no mention of voltage limitations.

Then there is 210.21(B)(3) which allows 15 amp receptacles on 20 amp circuits and 40 amp circuits to have 50 amp receptacles. This is the section that allows you to put all those 15 amp receptacles on 20 amp circuits that are seen all the time - usually 120 volt circuits but there is no voltage limit in there either.
