I had an exam recently and there was a question about MV cable and it's application, specifically if it was a direct sunlight cable or not. I looked article 310 but did not find it. I'm lost. Where should I have looked?
Thanks.

Interesting. Some MV cable is exposed to the sun at the top of the riser where it terminates in a pothead. What was the test question, exactly? If it asked simply if it needed to be sunlight resistant if it's installed where the sun can get at it, that would be true.

The question was: true or false MV cable is rated for direct sunlight?
I could not find it in my NEC 2005.
I don't think the NEC gets into that, but I could be wrong. The manufacturer's make it both ways, with most of it being sunlight resistant, since it is stored outdoors on reels normally for months on end. MV-90 and MV-105 are both normally sunlight resistant, whether you ordered it that way or not.

So what is MV cable typically used for? I've never heard of it and some of the guys from work could not give me a satisfactory answer.
2400v and up, normally. It's in a lot of cable trays in industrial places.

Thanks. I think it's safe to say that even though that's the "uses not permitted" paragraph, most or all of it is sunlight resistant now, and therefore permitted. That test question may well have been poorly worded.

I agree.
I guess the all encompassing 110.3(B) is the "out" in the real world...on the test, you have to go "by the book".

I'm sure you heard of "4160"?
4160 is "slang" for 5Kv ~ or vice versa

Here is a 5kv switch gear:

The cable that feeds the bus will be MV.
Here is some MV cable:

I see 328.12
Not for use in direct sunlight.

Thank you gentlemen for your quick responses and the code reference. :D :)

Unless identified for the use, ... shall not be used... where exposed to direct sunlight.

There's no way to answer the test question without more information on the cable they're quizzing you about. This is the type of thing that ticks me off about some tests.

Poorly worded question, no doubt.

In hind sight I see your point it could have been worded better to remove any confusion.

Look on the roof any any large manufacturing plant and there are MV cables in direct sunlight everywhere, I could post hundreds of pics.
