MV Cable Pull

What do you guys think about this setup/cable pull? Is it a good idea to have the reels on the trucks like that. Actually bidding a similar situation where where are pulling 3#500 MV cables into a 4" duct bank?
If you have a 400' run of existing conduit with a manhole in the middle of the run would I assume you would pull all the way through....setting up the reels at one end and the tugger at the other??? If you had a 90 degree turn at the manhole in the run how would you guide the cables to make that turn in the mahole? Thanks.

at some point, you really need some field hands with your company that you can
discuss this sort of thing with. there are too many variables to be addressed to
make an answer from the internet worth the time to read, or to write.

i've pulled (4) 500mcm aluminum feeders 725' in a 4" conduit, solo. no crew. by myself.

didn't use reel jacks, either. used unistrut bolted to the top of tall K-rail for spool caddys.
2" grc clamped, with 1 1/2" grc sleeved inside to prevent flex. empty spool on an axle across
a forklift for guidance.

used triggers for starting, and a target cam for monitoring the feed. worked fine. took about
two hours to pull. meggered it before i cut the wire. briefly hit 1,000# drawbar pull going around
the last 90.

that is the limit to what i can put in an email.

you want to see how that works in person? i'm $5k a day, plus milage. two day minimum.

nothing wrong with that set up- but,
is this your pull? ill assume not...

where in the run is the pull box?

why is there always one guy holding the dang small wire?! :)

where are the radios?

and last, starting and stopping the pulls like that are risky- one "go" sure was abrupt.. gently loading the head is a good idea.. anyhow, depending on where the ground vault is on the run, it might be a good idea to set up reels in the middle, do the long pull then peel off and slam the short run. its quicker to leave the reels in one spot- at least in some situations... when the reels get low there is always the risk of pulling them off the truck... what are you using for tugging?

edit- post a pic of the Christy box, make darn sure its big enough for (2) 4" 90deg stubs and are spaced far enough apart. were big 4"sweeps used?

hey, get the job then you can hire me for my paltry pay then you can read the paper! :) are you telling me you were not scared to do that solo? holy cow...

it took more than a pair of kleins to pull that one off.

a van and a trailer full of crap, and a full days prep to set it up right.
2,500' spools of 500mcm are awkward to set up by yourself.
i'd a not been able to do copper solo. too much weight to get it
started.

simpull kicks ass. and i'm getting too old for this stuff.

That's what I'm thinking we have about 30 different duct banks where we are pulling through 7-4" conduits at an average distance of 500'. I would think the setup for each pull will be time consuming.

if i hire you, then i have to do workers comp and a bezillion other things.
it's easier just to do it solo. i do appreciate the offer however.

doing things like that solo is better. no witnesses to post videos to
social media.

besides, i've seen what "wire pulling" crews can do.

ever seen a crew pull in feeders off a WEMCO reel without pulling
the lock pin? idjits didn't even know there was a lock pin.

five 500MCM conductors 350' long, ruined. when i got there, the
undersized ground wire had overspeeded the spool, and they had a
ball of wire 30' in diameter all tangled up. instead of stopping and
figuring out the problem, they just kept pulling.

i could go on, as there are a bunch of things you see in 40 years of
this, and that was the message to the OP. he needs to talk to HIS
guys that will do the pull, and get them sorted out.

not us.
 
i was kinda kidding... besides, at 5k a day you could make enough to file for financial responsibility/comp exempt! mv cable really is not that tough- but it can still get ruined quickly... I do enjoy big pulls though.

I’d pull from the manhole to each end and set terminal blocks on the wall.

It’s going to be hard to setup a pulley or sheave in there.... you’d have to fabricate something to mount it on horizontally. And idk if you already have any radiuses on each side of the manhole.

Or just pull it all the way through, leave 200’ on the ground, reset the tugger at the other end and start over.

I’d ask whoever is in charge of the pull what they think.
