So is steel MC a special order item or is that fitting strictly for older existing cables you'll find in homes?
I run across a lot of steel MC in commercial buildings, it was common when the transition was being made from AC to MC cable.
That being said, there is still a lot of new steel MC product out there. The MC Tuff product from AFC (blue armor) is lightweight steel armor, so the setscrew fitting show in the OP would be acceptable. Also, a lot of specialty MC cable is steel armor (fire alarm, home run cable, etc.)
Only time I ever had any steel sheath MC cable sent to me was one time when I asked for 10-2. Guessing it maybe was all they had at the time or something like that, otherwise all we normally get without specifying is aluminum sheath.I remember that blue stuff. I did a beauty spa with it and it was the first time I had ever done an entire job in MC. It was also nearly the last time I saw that stuff and it was back in '02. I thought maybe they had moved on, but at the time I just assumed that's what they gave you when you asked for MC.
Interesting to learn after all these years that it is something you have to ask for specifically.
Magnet test will clear that up if you can't tell otherwise.![]()
