My licensed A/C buddy did some hack A/C and electric work. No permit and not to code. Now his customer wants me to bid more work on the same property.

Stay away from it, don't ruin your reputation because your "friend" did some hack work. If you notice that the electrical work was done in an unprofessional manner, then it is your duty as an electrician to point it out and recommend that it be installed correctly before someone gets killed or the place burns down.

I would bid the work. If you get it then permit the work and fix anything that's not up to code. That's what we get paid for, correcting problems.
If your friend gets caught that's just to bad for him. You have to cover yourself.

If he just changed out and A/C unit then many places don't require a permit. The A/C guys here don't get a lot of permits except for new construction. Most of the HVAC contractors here won't touch anything electrical ( probably not enough money for them, their money maker is selling equipment ).

If I had a trade friend who did shoddy work before I got there, I'd drag his butt out to the site and bust his chops nicely until he did it right. If he's a real friend, your respect will be worth enough to him to make good on the install. And, well, if respect isn't enough, the threat of having you no longer refer work to him could be sufficiently inspirational.

Failing all of that, bid the work with corrections.

Thanks guys. I told the customer that we are booked for most of next week and l will call him back. I don't like putting him off, I just locked up and was unsure what to do.

My friend put the furnace in an attic that has improper clearance. He had to open the ceiling to get it in. It will never pass code. Then he had his guys run the branch circuit to the condenser by cutting the meter seal and pushing a NM through the service to a 3/4" PVC and on to the disconnect.

I thought I might get with my friend this weekend. Maybe my wife and I should take him and his wife out to our favorite Mexican food place? Just to talk to him about his work ethics.

It may be just me but I would rather hear about this in private. I don't think I would respond well if my friend invited my wife and I out for dinner and it turned into suggestions about how I conduct myself.
