My generator has two receptacles to plug into, one says L6-20/250V, the other says L5-30 125V. Both have three slots. My plug end (with the blades) says L6-20,20a/240V. It looks to me like it will fit in either receptacle. Which one should I plug into? Don't I need to plug into the 120V 30amp for a neutral? Or the 240V 20amp because I need both phases for my emergency panel? Thank you so much for your explanations bcause for some reason this confuses me. Thanks again.

Please enter the make and model of the generator.
If this is an emergency, start it up and checkk the voltage of each outlet.
This may be an old generatoor. Lots of them today also have a 4-prong outlet.

If you need a neutral, you will most likely need to use the 5-30 as the 6-20 should be 240 1phase here is a chart describing the nema configs.
