Hello group, my name is Art I’m trying to find out weather or not I need to use nema 4r panel boards in a mechanics shop, which is 200’ x 70’, it has a metal roof and sides which come down about 5’, all the way around building, there will be approximately 30’ of continues wall around both sides of area where panel boards will sit, do need to use rain tight panel boards ?. Thanks in advance

For the most part it is up to you to determine what level of protection is required.

Nema types are no longer used. They are UL types now but they are close to the same thing functionally.

I don't believe there is anything called type 4R there is a type 3R which is more or less rain tight. That's probably the most appropriate thing for you to use. Not because you really need it giving you have full size walls where the panel boards are located, but typically type 3R panel boards are relatively inexpensive. I think you could probably get by with type 1 which would probably cost a little bit less, but you never know what an inspector might say. In the end what you can actually get could determine whether it is type 1 or 3R.

By the way, if you decide type 3R panel boards are most appropriate and you can't get them, you can just put a type 1 panel board inside a type 3R Hoffman type enclosure. Cost more but might be easier to get.
