Does anyone here know how to tell when they will change to the 2020 NEC and a new version of the Fire Alarm Code for the NC Unlimited exam? I see what’s currently used and various suggestions people are making but no actual date when they plan to switch.

I would call the ncbeec.org and see what they say

It is very strange right now with code issues. As of Nov.1 we are on the 2020 except for residential codes which will stay on 2017 until they can agree on the amendments. Not sure when that will happen. The firs alarm code is on the 2013 I believe but I don't know when that will change

I’m trying to find what’s used on the test and when it might change. I messaged them but wondered if anyone here know better. Like, would they adopt a change to the version on the test immediately or adopt to start using it in 90 days? Sounds to me like there’s not a whole lot of transparency on this one.

From the NCBEEC website this morning.

EXAMS ARE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:

  • Electrical Contractors Licensing Law: General Statutes Chapter 87, Article 4 and Title 21(found in our Exam Information Handbook)
  • North Carolina Administrative Code Chapter 18B (found in our Exam Information Handbook)
  • National Electrical Code (NEC), 2017 Edition (available at www.nfpa.org)
  • NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management-North Carolina Electrical Edition (available at www.nascla.org)
  • National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA72), 2013 Edition (available at www.nfpa.org)

Yes I found that last night as well. Since I am preparing for the exam I was trying to find a way to know if there was a proposed date when they would start using the newer versions.

Go ahead and register for the exam, if they change you can argue you had been studying what was posted at the date of your registration. The NCBEEC is fair and very reasonable to work with.

Yes they told me if they change, it won't be till March, and that the 2013 fire alarm code (NFPA doesn't even sell that one anymore) will likely stay on past then.

To me this symbolizes issues with the NFPA's development that states are having problems adopting the 2020 NEC and are coming up with more of their own modifications to it.
