NCCER certification

I am looking into a NCCER certification for an Industrial Electrician. Does anyone know if you can do this on your own or do you have to be sponsered by your company? Also is this even worth getting into. Any info is appreciated.

I took the NCCER certification.
If you are sponsered, someone else pays for it.
I chose not to have a sponser - this way I am not beholding to anyone. It was expensive in two ways.

Time involved to take the classes

I went in expecting very little out of it, and I was extremely surprised at how great it was. My instructor was just awesome and I would love to one day be 1/2 as good as he was/is.
