I was just going over some literature regarding Box Fill & noticed that conduit entering or a box connector used for connecting the conduit to the box is not used in the Box fill calc. If I remember years ago the code stated 1 conductor for clamps or connectors. I read 314.16(B) which states no allowance needed for small fittings such as lock nuts and bushings but, it seems to me that a box connector takes up just as much room if not more then a cable clamp but it's not counted? Is this correct?

Re: Nec 2002 Article 314 Box Fill

Only internal cable clamps count as box fill. For example, a romex connector. If the lock nut is inside the box, it doesn't count. If the locknut is outside the box (and the clamping mechanism inside) it does count.

You are reading it correctly, but I don't think I agree that an external connector that only has an internal bushing or lock ring takes up as much room as an internal cable clamp. An external cable clamp would not have to be counted.

Re: Nec 2002 Article 314 Box Fill

Quick stupid question regarding upside down clamps. Is it legal to do that? I mean, if I fish an NM cable to a 1/2" KO in the top of a panel, can I use an upside down romex connector to fasten it?

Re: Nec 2002 Article 314 Box Fill

I have done it also several times when pulling SER through a pvc sleeve into a stacked duplex. A female pvc adapter on the outside, a romex clamp on the inside of the box to fasten it so it does not fall down. Works great!

Re: Nec 2002 Article 314 Box Fill

Good deal. I'm glad nobody caught the fact that if I couldn't get a romex clamp in the right way, how would I attach the lock ring to the connector? I then thought I'd be able to slip the lock ring down the wire and catch it. Still, I'm glad nobody ripped into me for that goof. :)

Easy anwser on this, is to check the U.L. listing of fitting.

Jim good question is a topaz hit lock connector allowed to be used in this manner I have done it several times, but is it allowed to be used like this.Easiest way no drywall damage if you can get there from above or below. At a panel the fire blocking is removed and access is reletivley easy from either way. ;)

Re: Nec 2002 Article 314 Box Fill

I have used and seen others use them on new homes and they pass inspections.Keep in mind i have not done but one new house in last year so would run it past the inspectors first. It is a faster way to make up a panel and on remodels i like to use the non locking ones that slip up from inside the panel.Pull wire first then just slide it over it.No holes to patch that way.
Maybe someone has a web page on them and there use.
