Is there any information in the new 2011 NEC that would tell us about how far away you need to put a GFI duplex outlet from the edge of a sink in a counter top? Is there any regulations on how close to the sink it can be. Commerial or Res.

The 2008 and 2011 have the about same requirements so nothing is new. Can you be more specific as to the location of the receptacle?

GFI Outlets.

GFI Outlets.

Yes all I need to know is there any information for installing GFI outlets with in the six feet of the sink.
So the answer is you can put them anywhere as long as it is a GFI I am ok.

For the most part yes, but:

406.5(E) Receptacles in Countertops and Similar Work Surfaces
in Dwelling Units. Receptacles shall not be installed in
a face-up position in countertops or similar work surfaces.

Mark, your question is phrased in a most unusual way. It sorta sounds like "How close is too close?". Is that what you are asking?

If we are talking about a residential kitchen, there is a clear requirement that there must be one within 24". In a residential bathroom, on the other hand, the requirement is within 36". But I don't think there is any wording about "too close". Common sense should prevail there. Some of the best guidance can be found in the illustration called "Figure 210.52(C)(1)" in the 2011 code.

We are talking code, commonsense will have little to do with it.:D

For what it is worth the code does not have illustrations, the installations are from the handbook and are not code but peoples opinions of the code. The opinions are no more valid then the opinions found here.
