I have motorized curtains in Student Commons room and I have under counter dishwasher in Cafe of school. Asked engineer to provide disconnecting means within sight of motor and this is what I was told:

The electrical designer says motorized shades are located in open and public space. He considers this location for the disconnecting means to be impracticable and introducing additional hazards to the students. Same with dishwasher.

So he used NEC 2017 Article 430.102(B)(2)(a) and provided lockable breaker.

I dont see how disconecting means within sight of motorized shades and under count dishwasher be impratciable and create additional hazardous to students?

Has anyone ever experienced this for motorized shades and for under counter dishwasher? Would above be acceptable?

I see both of those as appliances and 422.31 permits remote lockable disconnects.

Schools and colleges are almost as bad as prisons for the destruction of equipment. I agree with the engineer and would never put a disconnect in a public area in those occupancies.
