NEC 210.8 (B)(3) GFCI in non-dwelling kitchens

NEC 210.8(B)(3) requires all 125V, 15 and 20 Amp receptacles located in non-dwelling type kitchens to GFCI protection for personnel. How does the NEC define a kitchen location? For instance, is a bakery or deli in a retail store considered a kitchen location?

No defintion of kitchen in the 2002 NEC. What you describe would be a kitchen in my opinion. However there is a proposal for the 2005 NEC to define a kitchen, if this is an issue for you perhaps your inspector would use that definition. I don't know what exactly the proposal is, you can find it at the NFPA web site.

Heres the proposed definition for the 2005 Code:

Proposals Report of CMP-1 Proposal 1-114: Add Definition of "Kitchen" Kitchen. An area used, or designated to be used, for the preparation of food. Need given for definition was to identify areas of non-dwelling kitchens requiring GFCI protected 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles as per Section 210.8(B)(3).

The Washington State Administrative Code has a similar definition, but it includes the phrase, ?or beverages.? This means that a coffee service and a soft drink bubbler would be included in the definition of ?kitchen.?
