Imagine four 2? conduits in a horizontal line. They enter a pull box on (let us say) the North face. The only removable cover is on the top. The conductors are turned 90 degrees to the left, and exit the box via four 2? conduits in a horizontal line on the East face. How much room is needed between the North and South faces? My answer is 18? ( 6 x 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 18 ). But what if the conduits enter and leave in a vertical, not horizontal, line? Is the answer different?
A coworker makes a case that the situations are different, that the vertical line is not a ?row,? and that 12? is enough ( 6 x 2 = 12 ). And he?s not just quibbling about ?row? versus ?column.? We both believe that the intent is to provide room to manipulate the cables. But he suspects that the second case (vertical line) does not require the added room between the North and South faces. His reasoning is that when the second set of conductors is pulled into and through the box (followed by the third and the fourth), it will be run above the first, and not between the first and the South face.
Two questions:
(1) Any comment on the difference between the horizontal and vertical cases?
(2) If two of the four conduits were used for small wires (under size 4), would I have to count those two, or would the required distance be only 14? ( 6 x 2 + 2 + 0 + 0 = 14 )?
