NEC 422.31 allows an appliance over 300 VA and over 1/8 horse power to have the disconnect at the breaker, out of sight, if the breaker is locked out. NEC 422.32 requires the disconnect to be in sight if it is a motor driven appliance. What is a motor driven appliance? Is a furnace a motor driven appliance? Why or why not.

I would say that a furnace is a motor driven appliance. Gas furnaces consist of a blower motor, and inducer motor (90%+) and control power. So if the blower motor is more than 1/8 HP it would need to have a disconnect located within sight of the appliance.
