I look at the above NEC section and I see a contradiction. The last phrase of the rule state's:

...a higher size, rating, or possible setting that does not exceed the next higher standard ampere rating shall be permitted.

In one part it say's "higher size, rating or possible setting" and in another it say's "that does not exceed the next higher rating". This is a conflict in terms of wording.:confused:
 
They're saying that you can go up to the next higher size standard OCPD rating listed in 240.6(A). If you had a value of 120 amps you can up to the next higher standard size of 125 amps but you cannot exceed that next higher standard size.
