Hello All,

Question, I have two motors (1/3HP each) used for reel hose are connected to a 20A, 120V circuit. Each motor has a starter with overload protection. Reading 430.53 (A) it appears i'm not in compliance with #1 since 1/3HP (7.2FLA) exceeds the 6A. I always thought I can do it since until someone brought it to my attention. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

430.53(A) Not Over 1 Horsepower. Several motors, each not exceed-ing1 hp in rating, shall be permitted on a nominal 120-volt branch circuit protected at not over 20 amperes or a branch circuit of 1000 volts, nominal, or less, protected at not over 15 amperes, if all of the following conditions are met:
(1) The full-load rating of each motor does not exceed 6 amperes.
(2) The rating of the branch-circuit short-circuit and ground-faultprotective device marked on any of the controllers is not exceeded.
(3) Individual overload protection conforms to 430.32.

Isn't the installation allowed under 430.53(B)? With a tabular FLC of 7.2A, the maximum allowable SC/GF OCPD for one motor is 250%*7.2 = 18A, which can be rounded up to 20A per 430.52(C)(1) Exception 1.

Cheers, Wayne
