I'm looking at NEC 680.22(A)(1) and 680.22(B). These two rules give differing conditions for providing GFCI protection for receptacles or outlets supplying pool pump motors. In the first case the condition is that the receptacle is located between 6-10 feet from the inside walls of the pool. In the second case the condition would seem to indicate that a branch circuit with short-circuit and ground-fault protection is used to supply a pool pump motor. However, in this second case the GFCI protection would be provided regardless of distance and in all cases where there is short-circuit and ground-fault protection. If it weren't for the condition of their being short-circuit and ground-fault protection then there would be a conflict between the two rules. Am I correct in assuming this?

680.21(C) requires gfci for pool motors no matter where they are if they are 120-240V 15 or 20 amps. The receptacle for a pool motor is specific to 680.22 (A)(1). 680.22(A)(2) is for other receptacles not related to circulation. I don't see the issue.

Okay, apparently they changed it for the 2011 NEC in that the words short-circuit and ground-fault protection were taken out. I was looking at 2008 at first. My mistake.

But it still appears to be odd. Why include GFCI protection in 680.22(A)(1)? It's a given that all receptacles supplying pool pump motors are to have GFCI protection regardless of distance. The wording in 680.22(A)(1)(1) confuses the issue by making it sound like only receptacles feeding pump motors within 6-10 feet are to have GFCI protection.:?
