NEC 710, residential generator- stand alone system?

hey all-

thought this was simple but someone pointed this out to me at the beginning of 710. "this article covers electric power production sources operating in stand alone mode."
is a residential generator a stand alone system as defined by the NEC when the power goes out? is it operating in stand alone mode.?

No, stand-alone means the generator is the only power source; there would be no other neutral to be switched or not.

Residential generators are usually covered under Article 702 Optional Standby Systems.
