Trying to determine the meaning of this:

NEC 725.136(G) states that class 2 and 3 circuit can be installed with class 1 circuits if they are installed in type MC cable.

No sure what they mean by the type MC cable? Does the mean the cable must be approved as UL type MC or can it be a armored type PLTC cable?

Thanks

if the code says MC cable, it has to be MC cable.

If the armored PLTC cable is dual rated as MC you could use it, but that seems unlikely.

I do not think there is a cable made that has a PLTC and also MC rating? This is basically eliminating PLTC from being used when mixed with power or class 1 cables. I always thought that a PLTC could be mixed with other cables as long as it was armored?

Thanks for the help!

I think you can make an argument that the armor is a separater.

I think they are saying that PLTC can not be used unless it is type MC. This will eliminate type PLTC whether it has armor or not since it most likely will not have the MC rating. UL type ITC can be used in this situation as long as it is rated ITC and has a metallic sheath or armor as per 727.5 exception #2. It looks some of the PLTC is starting to have a ITC dual rating.

I am trying to determine what type cables can be used in a cable tray when mixing voltages, Instrumentation, and anything. I know this is not the best practice but many cable trays that I see are already installed in this fashion. Here is what found so far...

Can use these cable only if mixing any voltages and class 1,2,&3
MC (Must be type MC for voltages greater than 600V or have a tray divider)
TC or TC-ER
ITC if armored
Fiber (any NEC/UL rating as long as the cable in nonconductive and has no armor)

These cables cannot be used
PLTC - must be Type MC
TECK90 - no UL listing only CSA
ACIC - no UL listing only CSA

Thanks
