NEC Ampacity Question

I am struggling with Example problem on page 257 of the NEC 2017 Handbook. How do they get 6 conductors....are we supposed to just assume that 2 AWG means two pairs of these for an AC circuit? I initially thought just 2 (two) - #2 wires were needed here. Verbiage is very confusing and should be clearly stated! Am I missing something, or not thinking something through?

Six conductors is just part of the problem...They could have used any number of conductors greater than three to show the adjustment factor.

They show two separate steps. First they apply a correction factor for ambient temperature. Then they apply an adjustment factor for more than three current-carrying conductors.
