Looking for the years that each edition of the NEC were issued going back to the 1960s. Where can I find this info? Are old editions available online like you can with the current edition? Am specifically wanting to look up article 551 relating to RVs so I can research the changes that were made over the years. So far I've only been able to determine that there was a 1996 edition but no farther back than that. I'm a Canadian EE (retired) and this is the sort of info. I have no idea where to find.

Thanks.

I would suggest talking with you AHJ. I have several old code books dating way back....I think I even have that one at my office. But I'm out of town and won't be back for a couple weeks. If you don't find out before then feel free to contact me in two weeks

I think at one time the NFPA had the old versions of the NEC available on pdf to members. Non members had to pay a fee iirc.
But I don't know if that is presently the case:?- if not or if they do and you dont want to pay the fee - it's Amazon or Ebay time.:D

Maybe another member will chime in to let you know if the NFPA deal is still available.

I remember a thread many months ago where some members posted their NEC libraries, going much further back than the 60s. Isnt/hasnt it been issued every 3 years for quite some time now (WW2 perhaps)?

All the issued years are listed in the front of each code book on the Copyright page.

Here it is from the 2011 NEC

This 52nd edition supersedes all other previous editions, supplements, and printings dated 1897,
1899, 1901, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1907, 1909, 1911, 1913, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1923, 1925, 1926, 1928,
1930, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1937, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957,
1958, 1959, 1962, 1965, 1968, 1971, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002,

If you are trying to determine whether something was required on a given date, finding a requirement in the NEC is not in and of itself evidence that something was required.

You would have to find out what code edition, if any, was adopted in the jurisdiction at the time in question.

Many jurisdictions do not adopt the latest edition and I've never heard of any jurisdiction adopting the NEC by "latest edition". This means in 1960 someone could still have a 1940 code on the books. If that's the case, you need to read the 1940 edition. A city clerk is a good resource to find out what edition was in effect on a given date.

Interesting question. The first page of the NEC (70-1) lists dates of "editions, supplements and printings"
As of the 2014 edition it has had 53 editions, supplements or printings. I believe it has been on a three year cycle since 1959.
The NFPA's website lists 43 possible choices for past "Editions"
So my guess is that there are 43 editions and 10 supplements or printings.
I can confirm the jump of "editions" from 1940 to 1947 from the 1947 book.
Take a look here:
http://www.nfpa.org/codes-and-stand...-and-standards?mode=code&code=70&tab=editions

I believe the first year article 550 & 551 appeared was 1965 but I am not 100% sure.
