Reference Art 230.71 says that the service disconnecting means for each set of service entrance conductors shall be up to six. Does this mean that where two service feeders are permitted that each may have up to six disconnects?

We have a situation where we have a two service feeders each feeding a MLO switchboard. One feeder is a 3,000A feeder. The second is a 2,000A.

Each switchboard has 3 disconnects. Can one additional disconnect be installed on one of the switchboards. The switchboards are located in the same electrical room and feed circuits in the common building.

If they are in separate enclosures, you can have 6 in each. However, all other conditions must be met even if they have only 3 per.

2002 NEC 230.2 Number of Services.
(E) Identification. Where a building or structure is supplied by more than one service, or any combination of branch circuits, feeders, and services, a permanent plaque or directory shall be installed at each service disconnect location denoting all other services, feeders, and branch circuits supplying that building or structure and the area served by each. See 225.37.

Re: NEC Art 230.71 (A)

I think you are right. The code seems to be clear that six disconnects are permitted for each feeder. I should have indicated that the feeders are from the same transformer. This could be interpreted as a single feeder under 230.2 since the feeders run to the same room and are connected together at the transformer. This would not appear valid since we can declare two feeders where one feeder capacity exceeds 2,000 amps.

Thanks for the help.
