We are working on a renovation with a number of existing panels. We have record drawings and have visited the site to confirm existing conditions, with a little engineering judgment as well. I feel that we can utilize NEC 220 Part III to determine the existing load on the panels (connected load). I have a client that feels there is no place in Part III that allows me to use this in an existing condition. They are claiming that the only method for determining existing load is via metering, 220.87. Thoughts?

I see no problem utilizing 220 Part III for determining loads on existing panels.

220.87 is part of the OPTIONAL Feeder and Service Load Calculations. I don't see it as being a required method.
