A change in the 2005 NEC has clarified that the every circuit should be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose or use. The identification shall include sufficent detail to allow each circuit to be distinguished from all others.

The 02 wording would allow you to lable a panel with 10 circuits labled "Outlets" and 10 circuits labled "Lights". With the change in the 05 you need to be able to identifiy each circuit so that they are distinguishable from the other circuits, such as "Kitchen lights" ect.

Also, I heard many years ago there is a minimum size to each space provided for the label. I recall it had to be 3" by ?", but I have never been able to find that requirement anywhere.

Panel labeling is one of my pet peeves. I'd hate to be a HO looking at a panel schedule that looked like this:

1. General.............2. General
3. General.............4. Lights
5. Kit....................6. DD
7. GFI...................8. Laun
9. WH..................10. AC
11. Furn...............12. AC
13. Smoke............14. Kit
15. Lights.............16. General
17. Ext................18. BB
19. MB................20. Bath
21. WP................22. WP
23. Gar................24. DR

As electricians, we could make sense of this, but what about the poor HO standing there?
