Does anyone know what the definition of 'free air" is? as in cables in free air.

That would be like a service drop where the wires run from pole to pole or overhead from one building to another.

Although it's not a code definition in my mind it conductors that are not in a raceway or cable. I would have to think about in cable trays since they're a support system and not a raceway.
