I have a lineup of 4160V switch gear and we are installing 480V switch across from it. According to table 110.34(a) in the NEC handbook there should be a minimum of 5ft between them. Since this is an existing building and the switch is going to be new is there an exception that it can be less than 5ft for medium voltage? I know for low voltage there is an exception but I cannot find one for medium voltage.

I think I would see that as a Condition 3 installation and be looking for 6' between the switchgear and the 480 volt switch.

What you are thinking about in 110.26 is now known as 110.26(A)(1)(c). It was an exception at one time. However that just lets you use Condition 2 spacing for new equipment in an existing building that should require Condition 3 spacing. I don't think there is any provision lie that in Part III of Article 110.

Note that the language in 110.26(A)(1)(c) is what makes me say that your installation is a Condition 3 installation. The only thing I am not sure about is how you apply this where one piece of equipment is covered by 110.26(A) and the other by 110.34(A)
