What are the codes for running conduit in wet locations?

It is PVC coated rigid conduit, where dirt and water can be on the conduit for long periods of time. I had to replace some PVC coated rigid conduit the other day, the coating had separated from the conduit. The weight of the dirt broke the conduit at a union and sorted out the wires. I want to know what the codes are for areas of this nature.
