I understand that in the NEC, cooking equipment is considered ranges, wall mounted ovens, and cooktops.
A counter mounted cooking unit is defined to be what we would commonly call a cooktop. A permanently installed microwave does not appear to meet this definition.
This is asked in applying the the demand factor permitted by 220-32(a)

Can permanently installed microwaves be considered as meeting the requirements of 220-32(a)(2)?
I've always considered a microwave as an appliance and if fastened in place it would fall under 220-17 for a individual dwelling calculation.

Thanks

To your question, my answer would be ?No.? To your expression of an opinion, my reaction is that I agree.

But it is an interesting issue. 220.19 includes ?other household cooking appliances individually rated in excess of 1.75 kW.? It?s been a long time since I?ve bought a microwave. Do they have that kind of power (i.e., equivalent to 114.6 amps)?

I think you have an extra 100 Amps in there. 1750 Watts/120 Volts = 14.6 Amps

The largest microwaves I've seen are in the 1.5 kW range, usually closer to 1.0 kW.

in excess of 1.75kw
It is interesting that the 1.75 kw number comes so close to 15A. It seems like they may have been trying to exclude appliances on a 15A branch circuit.

Wait... the table says 1.75 kw, but the text says 1 1/3 kw, or am I missing some difference between the numbers? (2002 NEC). A microwave could probably exceede that number.

My gut feeling is that if you are sizing a service or feeder, you are sizing it too small if a fraction of the microwave power makes a difference.
