Hello,
Does anyone else dislike the fact that the 'NEC Digest' is going to no longer be in print format ? I for one have always enjoyed reading through the printed magazine especially during those down times either in the evenings or in the stall at work. I don't want to have to read through it online or have to take the internet connection into the bathroom with me in order to catch up on some reading ! Do you ?
I'm not sure how many of you out there actually subsribed to it , but I really did enjoy the printed version. Perhaps we could poll the topic and send the results to the publisher ! (NFPA).
I can understand thier point of keeping up with society as a whole, but some of us just don't enjoy doing our reading online !
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts on this with you all .
Carl :)

I agree with you Carl. Certain things like magazines and catalogs are better in print form where you can either casually flip through them or peruse them in detail. With the advent of the digital formats and information less and less things are being printed. To me this is not a good thing, albeit an environmentally friendly one.

Right here.
I enjoy the serendipity of magazines. I don't read them in any particular order, and some of the most interesting learning is done by flipping around. I don't like the fact that some manufacturers don't have a printed catalog anymore either. They've switched to catalogs on CD. Bummer.

I don't mind it too much. I spend alot of time in front of the computer and find it easier to quickly look up something I read in a magazine by finding it online.

Do you think one day there won't be a printed copy of the NEC?

That will be a dark day for me.

I know quite a few electricians who still do not have a computer, and some whose kids have one, but the adults don't go online. Whether they read the Digest or not I couldn't say for sure. What's interesting, though, is how much the "web" has become a part of the electrical trade. In my job as an inspector for a private 3rd party inspection agency, I'm on the web a lot both in the early morning and again in the evening.
My friends at the government level are on most of the day.

I don't read any online magazines and don't plan on doing that in the future.

Ditto for me. There's something about flipping through a glossy magazine that is superior to reading information off of a monitor.

The NEC digest is a terrific publication, however it was first bi-monthly, then quarterly, and thats a hard way to publish a magazine. John DeDad (of EC&M) and I discussed NEC digest last month and he seemed to see it coming.

I get more catalogs from the NFPA and letters wanting me to rejoin than any other company. I haven't been a member for two years.

Considering it's already out on CD and the NFPA produces it as well, we might all be in for a huge surprise in 2011 !

The company I work for banned this practice, claiming it was unhygenic.

I do wash my hands both before and after ! Besides that, I don't leave it in there, it goes back to my book shelf afterwards until I choose to read through it some more !

My guess is that the prohibition involves something other than hygiene. A magazine or newspaper in hand can turn a short visit into a long one. Not something the boss is happy with if you're getting paid by the hour.

"I usually carry the trade magazines around in the truck and read them at lunch."

Joe

Joe,
What other trade magazines are there ? The only ones I'm familiar with are the 'NEC Digest' and 'ECM' of which the first has gone digital only as of the December issue and the other is known for inaccuracies in the publication.
Would you mind listing the others that you are aware of for me and possibly others ?
Thanks,
Carl
