Does anybody know of any state that does not enforce the National Electrical code? I know that many states are all over the map as to which code cycle that they enforce. Are there any any states or countys that have no enforcement at all?

If there is, there is probably a fortune to be made doing service calls and selling smoke detectors....

Maybe the link I posted isn't the best resourse. . I clicked on Ohio and the information was wrong. . It says we're on the '08NEC. . The truth isn't that clear cut.

Starting 01/01/08
We're on the '08NEC for Commercial projects [all except 1,2,+3 fam rez].
We're on the '05NEC for Residential projects [1,2,+3 fam rez].

We're projected, but not confirmed, to go on the '08NEC for Residential projects starting 01/01/09.

Thanks Dave didn't think about Mikes state info. Never thought that when I posted question that it might open up a gold rush for non licensed people to relocate and install electrical work.

I worked for a company that wired tract homes in Harris County in the 70's (outside Houston, Tx) with no inspections...spiderwebbed everywhere. Combine that with aluminum branch wiring, let's just say there were many charred vacant lots there in the 80's.

Illinois does not have a state code. It is only adopted by cities or counties.
Don are there cities or counties in Illinois that do not follow the NEC? If not are contractors licenses required? I have heard that different states have areas that no inspection is required and that the contractor certifies his own work. That would make for some interesting bidding!

This is becoming more common. For instance, Indianapolis has a 'self certification' ordinance. However, the combination inspectors sort of drop by on some jobs and if they are called because of a problem. Indiana has adopted the 2005 NEC with the Indiana amendments but there are some areas that have no building/electrical inspectors. The bottom line is that it is a mixed bag. :)
